"Flowtrees" (spatial origin-destination matrices) for studying migration patterns

Jo Wood, Jason Sykes and Aiden Slingsby City University London

[Project number 30113]

The primary focus of this project is to develop and apply our new visualisation technique ('flowtrees') for studying dense flow tracks spatially - notoriously difficult to map due to line overlapping and the visual occlusion that results. We are interested to see whether this technique can help in characterising population movement in UK over several decades.

Using data from longitudinal study will enable the researcher to work with flows derived from individuals across multiple censuses which will allow for intermediate points (rather than only origin and destination).

The project will use the following census and events data:

  • 1971 Census data
  • 1981 Census data
  • 1991 Census data
  • 2001 Census data
  • The project was approved on 23 APril 2009 and is supported by CeLSIUS.
