Derived variables: ethnicity
The 1991 Census was the first to ask how the respondents identified themselves in terms of ethnic grouping. In 1991 eight possible ethnic groups were offered on the form, plus space to write an 'Other' response. The 2001 Census also included an ethnicity question but the groups on the form included several types of 'Mixed' identity as well as, again, a space to write in a different response.
Derived variables offered here are an attempt to approximate ethnicity
for those enumerated in the 1971 or 1981 Census, on the basis of Country
of Birth. The aim is to make the derived variables compatible with a grouped
form of the 1991 responses rather than of the 2001 responses.
