Derived variables: communal establishments
Most people enumerated in the 2001 Census, as for previous Censuses, lived in private households. For those resident not in a private household but in a communal establishment there were special Census forms: one (brief) form about the establishment itself, to be completed by the person in charge, and one form to be completed by each usual resident. This latter form included a question:
| What is your position in this establishment? | Staff or owner | |
| Relative of staff or owner | ||
| Other (for example resident, patient, student) |
It is thought that this question was incorrectly answered in many cases and analysts studying residents in communal establishments may wish to take this into account.
